Artist of the Week The Scotsman / Scotland on Sunday | airplay on Amazing Radio + New Fond Sound and Off Axis playlists

When did you start performing solo, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

“I've been active as a musician since forming my first band The Bodies alongside my brother William Rogue in the nineties. Mark Brown and James Clifford, subsequently of the Cosmic Rough Riders were in the band too. We were part of a nascent music scene in Glasgow at the time and regularly made appearances at the Kazoo Club hosted by Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos. My brother and I later formed The Blimp, which is likely what I'm most known for. I've largely been a studio-based solo artist since, but I’m hoping to do some live dates next year.”

Tell us about your new release Be With You ?

"Be With You is about the superfluousness of pet names when simply being in the company of the person you love is enough.”

Do you take inspiration from what's happening in the world around you or are your lyrics / songs based on personal experience?

“My songs find their inspiration in personal experience. Usually, the melody comes first, then the lyrics. My main instrument is guitar but I've had the occasional dalliance with bass and drums in bands in the past.”

What is the connection with Mark and James formerly from Cosmic Rough Riders?

“I've been good friends with Mark and James for many years. We were in a band together in the early nineties with my brother, William Rogue.”

Your day job is as an author / web developer, sounds cool, tell us more?

“I write narrative non-fiction mostly. My recent work has been published by the Scottish Book Trust, Gutter, and Razur Cuts. I've also been known to write the odd bit of comedy for radio.”

Tell us something most people wouldn’t know about you?

“I'm a massive Trekkie”
