Tell us a little bit about yourself, you toured in bands previously, when did you start performing solo?

I'm Martin Mullady and I'm a guitar player/singer and musician from Central Scotland, just outside Stirling to be exact. Music is pretty much all I've ever wanted to do and I've been playing guitar since I was old enough to hold one. I've been playing music in different bands and projects for around 18 years and it has been responsible for some of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I studied summer programmes at Berklee College of Music in Boston in my younger years and then I moved to Liverpool at 18. I met a great bunch of guys down there and we started a band called Built On Tradition that played all around the UK for a few years. When I moved back to Scotland a couple of years later, I started playing acoustic shows in 2013 which quickly snowballed and took over to playing nine or ten shows a week. I've always written music throughout my life and I had amassed a huge collection of ideas and demos over the years that I felt I really needed to record and release. I met loads of great people and had some great gigs, but playing in a band was always my passion, now here we are.

Tell us about your single Little Changes, when is it released?
The new single Little Changes has quickly become a fan favourite at gigs and one that people always get really involved in. I had a conversation with an old friend of mine who, at one time in his life, was full speed ahead and heading down the wrong path. I met him one day and he had turned everything around and was doing great. I asked him what had changed and he said he had just made little changes each day. That idea stuck with me and I looked back at all the little changes that my pals and I had made over the years that brought us to where we are. I had the musical idea while back but when I sat down to write the lyrics, they just came together perfectly. It is released on Friday 13 May 2022.

Do you take inspiration from what's happening in the world around you or are lyrics / songs based on personal experience?

It changes from song to song if I'm honest. You can’t help but be influenced by the world around you, especially in today's world where you can find out about anything in seconds. I do think everyone has a story to tell and whether it's my own personal story or stories of people I've met along the way, I think they're all important in terms of realising that we're not really all that different from one another. Not really.

How does your songwriting / recording process work?
I write music more or less constantly. It annoys a lot of people when things get dropped so I can sing into my voice recorder on my phone or find a pen to scribble an idea down. Musical ideas are usually the start of the process and I generally write instrumental pieces that inspire vocal melodies.  When I write lyrics, they're usually inspired in a lot of ways by the vocal melodies of the song.  It's just the way I've always done it.

What do you have in the calendar, festivals, gigs, releases?

  • 13 May - The Royal Oak, Alloa (supporting Deltamanic)

  • 14 August – Nice n Sleazy, Glasgow (supporting Possil Mor)

  • 4 September – Vibration festival, Callander Park, Falkirk

  • 12 November – The Oakwood, Sauchie

There is a lot more live dates in the pipeline and they'll be added to the calendar as we go along. There is a lot more music to come across the year as well with another three or four releases to be out before the end of the year. Keep an eye on the website and all the social media outlets to keep up with the news.

What do your career highlights look like?

There has been loads crammed in to the last ten or twelve years but highlights include closing out the IPO festival at the Cavern Club twice. Playing legendary venues like King Tuts, Cavern Club and Manchester Club Academy, supporting Kyle Falconer, a real inspiration of mine, alongside Shauny from The Shermans, and of course, playing sold out gigs in front of the fans that supported me and made it all possible.

Tell us something most people won’t know about you?

I have a mole that's placement gave rise to the nickname Scaramanga. I'll let you work that one out. He's pretty bad ass though, so I'll take it. On a more serious note, I'm a big fan of traditional Scottish music. I love the sound, the melodies and they way it can really paint a picture in your mind.
